Drop what you're doing, call a sitter, change your plans, and go see this movie TONIGHT, last chance (9/6/12)

What an incredible shame -- this is an amazing, uplifting, wonderful, hysterically funny, serious movie . . . and so few people went to see it that the distributor asked for the print back so it could be taken to other places where more people would take a chance on a movie with subtitles.

Salem Cinema shows yet again that it's far and away the premiere portal connecting Salem and the larger world out there, a Salem treasure with no equal.

Treat yourself to a great movie in the setting it was meant to be seen in --
go see "The Intouchables" tonight, its last night in Salem.

(It's a far, far better movie than Exotic Marigold Hotel, which is a decent film.  So if you liked that, don't miss this!)

Best bet for today (through Weds): Manhattan Short Film Festival -- Only Oregon venue is Salem Cinema

The ever-amazing Salem Cinema brings the fascinating and memorable Manhattan Short Film Festival . . . a world-wide film festival where YOU get to choose the winners (along with people on almost every continent). This is the third year for it at the new Salem Cinema location at Broadway and Market.

Just another of many reminders of how lucky we are here in Salem to have this tremendous resource, bringing us perspectives we would likely never encounter otherwise. Remember, a movie at Salem Cinema a week helps keep this gem sparkling brightly here in "So-Lame."

Give yourself a present -- go see "I AM" at Salem Cinema, quick!

The Willamette Valley's pre-eminent movie house scores again with "I AM" -- a movie difficult to explain but wonderful to see. Treat yourself, and take friends and family, you won't be sorry.

Two resolutions to consider: A Movie a Week and Six Pints a Year

Salem Cinema is not out of the woods yet.

It never will be.

An indy theater that shows great documentaries, foreign films (in, gasp!, foreign languages), plot-driven dramas, and quirky films that would never draw the megastudio backing will ALWAYS be in dire need of community support. And that means you, you who appreciate what a rare gem we have, three screens for intelligent and beautiful films, easily a rival (and probably outdoing) every other theater from San Francisco to Vancouver BC.

All you have to do to keep this treasure in your life is to enjoy it. So make your 2011 resolution: A movie a week at Salem Cinema. We'll all be the better for it.

And when you're not enjoying the fine offerings at Salem Cinema, consider going to any of these. In the coming hard (and getting harder times), we are all going to have to depend on each other a lot more. And there's nothing more essential to community-building than providing for our own blood supply. Most healthy adults can donate six pints a year (every eight weeks). Takes about an hour, and makes a world of difference.

It literally SAVES. LIVES.

Think about that. YOU can SAVE LIVES. TODAY, while relaxing on a couch. Not an exaggeration. Not hype. People in accidents, people getting tumors removed, people fighting cancers and cancer treatments, people with infections, people whose blood doesn't clot properly, and on and on and on. All of them die unless there is an uninterrupted supply of blood available for them.

Likely you'll be one of those people some day, you or someone you care about. So make and keep the resolution: Donate your six pints a year if you are eligible to donate.

Just to point out how easy it is to donate blood, your editor just finished his 80th donation here in Salem, on top of another 70 or so elsewhere over the years. Of all the charitable gifts we've given over the years, these have been the most satisfying. LOTS of people can write checks, but no amount of checks will keep someone alive if what they need is blood. Especially important if, like me, you're blood type O- (universal donor).

"Living Downstream" -- Thursday, 10/21, Salem Cinema

The Earth flag is not an official flag, since ...Image via Wikipedia"And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books [there is] no end; and much study [is] a weariness of the flesh." -- Ecclesiastes, 12:12

There are many many many books on the environment, and many many many more on health.

And, with few exceptions, nearly even one of those wearying books pales before the disturbing, poignant and powerful book by ecologist and poet Sandra Steingraber, author of, most prominently, "Living Downstream: An ecologist's personal investigation of cancer and the environment."

Haven't seen the movie yet, but it's at the Salem Film Festival Thursday night, and if it's 1/1000th as good as her book, it would be a crying shame to miss it. Support the Salem Film Festival and its work in bringing important movies to Salem -- come see "Living Downstream," and remember that, as Steingraber shows in her moving, unforgettable book, we all live downstream.

Great interview with her here.

Another look at a local gem and "A Movie a Week" reminder

As a proud film host sponsor through my job (see logo), went to the Salem Film Festival today* with my bride and the crazy neighbor -- saw an excellent trio of short films all connected by the theme of aging and approaching the end of life. Just another day for the Salem Cinema, bringing lil' ol' Salem, Oregon some of the finest films in the world, for peanuts.

(*still going all week -- see you at "Winnebago Man" tomorrow night and "Living Downstream" Thursday night!)

As Salem Cinema owner Loretta Miles quoted some film-maker or other as once saying, "Nobody ever made a movie and said 'Damn, that's going to look great on the small screen.'" And that's exactly right -- TV and DVDs and streaming videos to HD are still nowhere close to the cinematic experience of sitting in a dark, quiet room with other film lovers, all knowing that you're sharing an experience of wonder and discovery together.

Got me to thinking that I wished I had saved all my Salem Cinema tickets since I started going -- but then I realized that Loretta archives all the showings on the website. So here is all the movies I've enjoyed at the Salem Cinema so far. With your help -- your regular attendance at Salem Cinema -- we'll be able to do this again in a year and for many years after that, keeping track of our unbelievable luck to have Salem Cinema and Salem Film Festival bringing us these gifts. (Looking through these archives is amazing -- there are SO many great movies that I missed! My punishment will be having to watch them on DVD, a pale imitation of the real movie experience.)
