For your pre-New-Year's-Eve tax-planning

You probably already support one or several of the 1,200 arts and culture groups in Oregon that, collectively, look to the Oregon Cultural Trust for support. Thanks to a unique law, you can turn your support for those groups into a zero-cost-to-you donation to the Oregon Cultural Trust.

It works like this. Say you gave ten $100 gifts to arts and cultural organizations in Salem, such as
That means you gave a total of $1000 to supported groups -- now, give another $1,000 to the Oregon Cultural Trust and it costs you nothing because you get a $1,000 Cultural Trust Tax Credit. Thus, you can give a total of $2000 to support arts and culture in Salem and your net cash outlay, after tax deductions and credits will be range from only $210 to $410, depending on your federal tax bracket -- so you get to support arts and culture in Salem with real dollars that only cost you dimes. A worthy group we'll all need one day

Funerals are one of the biggest ripoffs in modern America. Nearly five decades after Jessica Mitford's expose of mortuary greed and wheeling dealing, it's only become worse. Luckily, there's an alternative for those of us in Salem (and elsewhere in Oregon):

The consumer-run non-profit called the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Oregon, part of a national network. They do one thing: help people make plans for the handling of their remains in a way that suits them (including in more environmentally friendly ways) so that nobody falls prey to any of the vicious operators who use grief and shock as tools to separate families from staggering sums of money.

Join. Make your plans (but don't prepay!). Contribute to FCAO. You can participate in managing the alliance if you wish. Just don't put it off -- by the time you need this, it's too late.

Funeral Consumers Alliance of Oregon

FCA of Oregon is dedicated to protecting a consumer’s right to choose a dignified, meaningful and affordable service at end of life, whether it be a funeral, cremation, or memorial service.

This is the place to find free information to help you plan end of life services for yourself and family members.

Click on “Join” to download a membership form which you can complete and mail to FCAO.

You can obtain free educational materials, brochures and information about funeral choices. See “Member Options”.

The companies listed under “Participating Mortuaries” have all agreed to provide FCAO members with reasonably priced arrangements so that members may plan their funerals in advance.

Our organization welcomes opportunities to provide speakers at small or large groups (churches, civic groups, retirement homes, hospice, etc.) increasing public awareness of funeral options.

Is Salem Audubon looking for you?

This is for you to think about regarding anyone you might know who would be interested in working with Audubon in protecting/promoting natural resources. Their director is retiring and they need part-time help in their Reed Opera House office.

The profile for an application is on their website, home page lower right corner.

The fascinating fact is that they have money and are about to build a nature center here in a wonderful spot near downtown. Nothing firm yet, but looks promising.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SALEM AUDUBON SOCIETY

Salem Audubon Society is an affiliate of the National Audubon Society in Salem, Oregon with approximately 1600 members. Salem Audubon Society provides nature education to school children, offers birding field trips and other member programs, and is involved in environmental advocacy. Salem Audubon has been considering potential sites for building a nature center.

THE POSITION
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall administration of Salem Audubon Society in its transition from a traditional birding organization to an organization developing and managing a nature center. This person provides organizational leadership, administers programs, manages finances, and supports the work of the board. This is a currently a half time position, but has the potential to evolve into a full time position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ability to convey the mission of Salem Audubon Society: Promoting the appreciation of nature and respect for natural places.

2. Demonstrated ability in financial management, including developing and managing a budget.

3. Demonstrated leadership skills and collaborative management style.

4. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Other demonstrated experience will be considered.
