More on Urban Chickens

WorldWatch notes that chickenmania is spreading.  Now that our economy is headed back into a Great Depression, time to learn from the wisdom of people who lived through it.

A few chickens on a city lot keeps down pests -- they eat slugs! -- provides good fertilizer, and provides nutritious, inexpensive food.  What's not to like?

I, too, wish to have a few pet hens as part of my permaculture-based ecosystem and to be closer to my food source. I have submitted a draft ordinance change (an amendment to the one that already allows for a pot-bellied pig in the city) for city council to consider. It is similar to what other cities around the country have done and would allow for a few hens, under certain circumstances, in the residential single family zone. Please encourage others to contact the city zoning department (Bryce Bishop) in support of this ordinance change. B.P.
