Remembering a better time

Time was, both major parties recognized that the best measure of the economic success of the country was how high the averages climbed on measures of prosperity, not how high the most extreme outliers could go.

If only we had that wisdom today.

Debunking another big lie from Big Ag

(From Wood Prairie Farm's newsletter)

Buying Influence.
Biotech's war of disinformation heats up.

Prop 37: Biotech and the Stanford Sell Out.

Early this week all the telltale signs were there. Biotech's $25 million massively funded propaganda campaign of disinformation - orchestrated by former tobacco lobbyists - aimed at confusing California voters into voting against their own interests: CA Prop 37, the peoples' Right-To-Know GMO Labeling referendum.

Then, a coordinated, national tsunami-like blanket coverage of suffocating proportions by the traditional media - down to the smallest hamlet including our local country radio station - of a 'new' Stanford compilation study which at once trashed organic, ignored biotech crops and held a no-questions-asked-assumption that the government's chemical-industry-friendly official pesticide tolerance levels were somehow scientifically-based and bulls eye accurate. The subject: under the lens of a narrow 'nutritional comparison,' a calculated unwieldy meta-analysis of 17 human studies and 223 laboratory studies of how does organic compare to conventional.

Within twenty four hours, the cracks in the processional's armor started to appear.

Noted Activist Post: "From Stanford Center for Health Policy's own website it is admitted that 'national' and international foundations and corporations' fund its research and 'outreach activities.' This confirms the suspicions of an increasingly aware public who saw the 'study' as biased, contradictory of both logic and ethics, and the result of insidious corporate-funding.

According to FSI's 2011 Annual Report Agricultural giant Cargill, British Petroleum (BP), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google, Goldman Sachs, the Smith Richardson Foundation, and many other corporate-financier, Fortune 500 special interests."

Agricultural giant Cargill is in fact in direct partnership with Stanford University. Specifically it has donated at least 5 million dollars for the creation of a Center on Food Security and the Environment (FSE). The center is allegedly 'committed to helping feed a growing population while preserving the planet's natural resources.' This will presumably be done through the use of patented Cargill biotechnology, have nothing to do with actually 'helping feed' anything but Cargill's bottom line and corporate-financier domination of the global food supply, while Stanford simply leverages its reputation and credibility to give cover and badly needed legitimacy to Cargill's methods and agenda. Stanford's most recent "study" is essentially the university "giving back" to Cargill and others."

Two lessons come to mind which are pertinent to this Stanford news story.
  1. Franklin D. Roosevelt: "in politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way."

  2. Mythically attributed to Watergate's Deep Throat: "Follow the money."
It is no coincidence that the corporations behind this propaganda coup are the biggest contributors to the biotech disinformation campaign deployed to defeat California Prop 37.

Below are links to some of the more pithy articles exposing the false 'journalism' and study critiques which expose Stanford's embarrassing complicity.

Drop what you're doing, call a sitter, change your plans, and go see this movie TONIGHT, last chance (9/6/12)

What an incredible shame -- this is an amazing, uplifting, wonderful, hysterically funny, serious movie . . . and so few people went to see it that the distributor asked for the print back so it could be taken to other places where more people would take a chance on a movie with subtitles.

Salem Cinema shows yet again that it's far and away the premiere portal connecting Salem and the larger world out there, a Salem treasure with no equal.

Treat yourself to a great movie in the setting it was meant to be seen in --
go see "The Intouchables" tonight, its last night in Salem.

(It's a far, far better movie than Exotic Marigold Hotel, which is a decent film.  So if you liked that, don't miss this!)

FoodCorps – Connecting Children to Real Food

Tuesday, September 4, 2012, noon to 1:15

Curt Ellis, the co-creator of the documentary King Corn and co-founder of FoodCorps, will share his vision for FoodCorps as an antidote to the epidemic of childhood obesity and as an engine for supporting local food producers. A "Peace Corps for school food," FoodCorps is mobilizing a nationwide team of leaders to implement a three-ingredient recipe for kids in limited-resource communities: (1) delivering hands-on nutrition education, (2) building and tending school gardens, and (3) bringing high-quality local food into public school cafeterias.
Curt Ellis, Executive Director of New York and Portland-based FoodCorps, is a leading voice in America's sustainable food movement. Co-creator of the documentaries King Corn, winner of a Peabody Award, and The Greening of Southie, Curt and his longtime collaborator Ian Cheney received a coveted Heinz Award in 2010. At 31, Curt and Ian were the youngest people ever to receive this award.

The son of Stoel Rives lawyer Barnes Ellis, after graduation from Lakeridge High School in 1998, Curt found his passion for food and agriculture at The Mountain School and Yale. Upon graduation from Yale, he moved to Iowa to investigate the role of subsidized commodities in the American obesity epidemic. It was there that King Corn was conceived.

Upcoming Film

We're Not Broke!

America is in the grip of a societal economic panic. Lawmakers cry "We're Broke!" as they slash budgets, lay off schoolteachers, police, and firefighters, crumbling our country's social fabric and leaving many Americans scrambling to survive. Meanwhile, multibillion-dollar American corporations like Exxon, Google and Bank of America are making record profits. And while the deficit climbs and the cuts go deeper, these corporations-with intimate ties to our political leaders-are concealing colossal profits overseas to avoid paying U.S. income tax. This film has won numerous awards, including Sundance Film Festival, 2012.
