STRONG Salem is for everyone who wants to help and participate in getting Salem, Oregon, to quit chasing Growth Ponzi Scheme plans and instead become a resilient, fiscally responsible place that lives by the wisdom that "Communities exist for the health and enjoyment of those who live in them, not for the convenience of those who drive through them, fly over them, or exploit their real estate for profit."
There is some interest in bike corral parking downtown, but merchants have hitherto been uncomfortable giving up auto parking for bike parking. So far the idea of giving up 2 car spots and gaining 20(or 16 or 12) bike spots for a net increase in parking and customers isn't registering. Efforts are stalled. Readers who are interested in seeing bike corrals in the city should write or call the city councilors and the city manager to share their support.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you patronize merchants whom you think might be interested, share the idea with them. Merchant interest is often the determinative factor.
